Today we planned to take advantage of the warmer weather and walk the Brooklyn Bridge. We caught the train from our block corner to the other side of Brooklyn Bridge so that we could walk back and get the views of the Manhattan skyline from outside the island. The whole train experience is fantastic, theres only ONE ticket which goes anywhere and theres only two types of services- an express and an all stops- which come past at least every 5 minutes. Though catching the train is easy- once your on the train its another game all together. The trains shake as if they are balancing on a single middle track...through an earthquake. After stumbling for a good 20 minutes, despite holding on to the steel posts, we decided to occupy the few empty seats in front of us. However, unbeknownst to us, the NYC train people thought it would be funny to make the seats out of the same shiny material as a childrens playground slide...If i put my hands above my head it would have felt like a roller coaster.
When we got to Brooklyn and emerged from the underground subway we felt a sensation we had been missing for the last week- the sun. Though the weather has been fantastic, direct sunlight barley reaches the land in Manhattan due to the dense skyscraper sky line. Before we embarked on the Brooklyn Bridge walk, we went to have lunch at a famous pizzeria called GRIMALDI'S. The pizza was absolutely amazzzzzzzzing!! words cannot describe the taste sensastion experienced when eating this pizza...but ill try. The mozzarella is fresh and creamy with a dense but soft texture and light cheesy flavour without being salty or oily. The tomato sauce is sweet and super succulent, filling your mouth with hot zesty juice with every bite. The basil and pepperoni combine to give off such an incredibly delectable smell you literally salivate between bites. If the pizza wasnt good enough, we ordered hand made cannoli's for dessert- a crispy sweet biscuit shell, filled with super sweet cream with chunks of dark chocolate. Absolutely unforgettable- i cannot talk highly enough of this place- what a lunch!
After lunch we headed over to the Brooklyn bridge to commence our walk back to Manhattan. The views were really remarkable- combined with the historic sandstone and suspension cables, along with Daisy's never seen before happiness, made the walk a really relaxing and enjoyable experience. It was also enjoyable to see the locals' frustration as they tried to cycle past tourists who completely ignored the line separating the walking path from the bike track. You see speeding bicycles yelling as they approach, whilst the tourists look up confused as if they thought it was God who was speaking to them. One cyclist was so angry he was using his mouth which sounded more like a shipping freighters fog horn than a bicycle bell.
When we got to the end of the bridge we followed Daisy toward the world trade center site so that she could negate her new found happiness. The site is currently an enormous construction site as they build the new 1 World Trade Center. Even though its half done, the facade cladding looks so shiny it looks like an artists impression and at night every level is illuminated a different colour turning it into a rainbow ghost after dark. At the memorial the sadness and sorrow of this tragedy could be felt exuding from the memorial walls....however it did not compare ....with any one of Daisy's stories.
