Day 6 pt 2 Chelsea Markets and Highline

After the Flea Markets we decided to catch a cab to the Chelsea Markets which is a weekly food marketplace. The cab driver was the type you see in the movies and we had to hold on to the seat in front of us for our dear lives- It was like being driven by a blind 'P' plater on crack. The markets here were more like a shopping centre but the building itself was amazing. It was an old factory or garage or something which had been fit out to accomodate the market place. Remnants of the ancient factory littered the ceiling and wall space. Old worn bricks, hundreds of year old copper fixings, tarred timber floors and the original steel structure was subtly expressed behind minor alterations like a strewn string ceiling.

We got through the marketplace and landed on the famed 'HIGHLINE' which is an old elevated railway track through a very old industrial area which has been reinvigorated as a parkland. The invigoration was lacking, however, due to the winter as all the plants were grey and brown. But the space and track was truly serene and a very well placed contrast against the harsh industrial locality. I saw a building which is surely the work of Frank Gehry, we walked through the middle of a building which was built over the tracks and the chairs are built as if the floor crawled up to form a seat- i truly enjoyed this place.

When we finished from the Highline we were close to a famous eatery called CHAT'N'CHEW which is well known for its fish tacos. We had to wait to get a seat and when we did they told us they dont serve fish tacos until after 4- so we had to order from the brunch menu. We got a chicken pot pie, a chicken day soup and a cheeseburger. The chicken soup tasted like salty water but the burger and pie were incredible- best thing we've eaten on the trip so far. The burger was fat and juicy and smothered in creamy coleslaw. The Chicken pie was so good even Daisy ate. It was soft with crunchy pastry and a thick buttery sauce- soooo good.

After we ate we walked through union square- a local park with squirrels- and we accidentally came across another FILENES BASEMENT and got sucked in to another crazy holiday ending shopping spree. 3 hours later we decided to catch the subway home.....big mistake. For a saturday there was a huge amount of people on the train. There was a line to get on to the station, then a line to get a ticket, than a line to get on to the train. The good news is that the lines move pretty quick- but this is still crazy for a saturday. We fluked the right train and got home exhausted- went bed at about 6.30.
